It doesn’t matter if you’re just a craft lover who’s super excited about attending one of these events or even a small business owner who’s taking the plunge- getting to go to your first-ever craft convention can be super rewarding! For the most part, these craft conventions can sometimes vary, but they usually entail a wide range of crafts (granted, sometimes they’re more niche), such as crocheting, knitting, painting, wreath-making, and the list could go on and on!
So, with all of that said, when you attend one of these, either as a vendor or a visitor, how do you properly navigate this? Sure, there is no doubt about it that there’s something really intimidating about it, but hands down, this will be totally fine. Here’s how you can navigate your first-ever craft convention!
You Should Pack Smart
So, this may or may not vary depending on what you’re planning on doing at the convention. plus, some venues might not even allow bags unless you’re a vendor. So, if you’re going there as a visitor, but you want to get known as a visitor (usually this means chitchatting and networking), then you’re going to have to pack a small bag or no bag at all.
Backpacks are usually not allowed at conventions for safety reasons, but a small purse is usually allowed. Anyways, with that said, you’ll want to pack some business cards (never DIY these unless you’re doing something super creative), maybe some 3D stickers with your branding to get people to remember you, but also maybe something like a QR code or virtual business card on your phone too (and a portable charger). If you’re going to be a vendor, then you might want to pack your
products, but also make sure you have business cards, a display setup that highlights your work beautifully, and any promotional materials like flyers or brochures. Don’t forget essentials like a notebook and pen for jotting down important info, a phone charger, snacks, and water. Sometimes, outside food is allowed (same for water), but sometimes, it’s not allowed. It really all depends.
Get Out of Your Shell and Network
Now, onto the fun part—meeting people! Alright, so this is fun, but it’s also super intimidating too, right? Well, conventions are buzzing with fellow crafters, potential customers, and industry experts. Don't be shy! There are plenty of people just as passionate as you are! So you’ll need to just go ahead and strike up conversations and genuinely engage with others.
Why not ask about their work, share your own story, and exchange business cards? You have to remember that networking isn't just about what others can do for you but also about building meaningful connections and supporting each other in this creative journey.
Don’t Be Afraid to Follow Up
After meeting up with people, why not reach out to them days later? Ideally, it’s best to send a quick email or message saying it was nice to meet them and perhaps suggest a way to stay in touch, whether it’s following each other on social media or meeting up for coffee to talk crafts. Keeping the momentum going is key to building lasting relationships.
