Have you moved recently? I've moved two times in the past two years.
Moving house can be expensive. Not only will you have the deposit on your new place to find, but there are all sorts of hidden costs that people forget about. Luckily, there are some savvy ways of keeping these costs down. Read on to find out what they are.
Declutter
Before you even begin thinking about packing up your possessions for your move, you need to declutter your home. This will save you money because the less you need to get from your old home to your new one the faster and cheaper it will be.
What this means is that it is well worth spending some time doing a deep declutter as you decide to start the process of looking for a new home. Then when you are ready to move you will have got the majority of items out of the way.
Remember to sell what you can, especially larger items you no longer want as the money you make can go into your moving budget pot. However, unless an item is worth at least $20-25 it's probably best to donate it to charity, or hold a garage sale, as the time it will take to list and post it online won't be economical.
Find a great value moving company
Many people believe that to save money when they are moving they need to complete the whole process, from start to finish themselves. However, this is not the case.
Instead, if you do your homework and find a company that specializes in household moving for a reasonable price you can keep your costs low without adding to the stress of the move. Indeed, often doing the loading, transporting, and unloading of items all yourself is a false economy because it means you are so worn out by the process that it takes you much longer to get settled into your new home.
Clean your property yourself
While it can be tempting to default to a professional cleaning company to clean your old property when you move out, you can save a small fortune by doing it yourself. All you need to do is make sure that everything is out of your old property so you can access every corner of the home.
Then you will need to complete the following regime:
- Use an appropriate machine to clean/ buff carpets/floors
- Wipe down all walls with sugar soap solution
- Wipe down all skirting boards with sugar soap solution
- Clean windows inside and out with a white vintage mix and buff them with newspaper
- Use a sponge to clean window frames and surrounds
- Take pictures to prove how you left your old home
Choose the right day to move
Lastly one of the best ways to save money is to understand which days are the most popular for moving home. These tend to be Fridays as this gives people enough time to do most of their unpacking over the weekend, while only having to take a single day off work.
However, if you are happy trading in some of your vacation days, you can probably get a much lower price on moving services by arranging them for the week. Many businesses offer a single paid or unpaid moving day off as well, so be sure to claim yours if you choose this option.
