What Kind of Jobs Can You Get With an ITIN? #sponsoredpost

Although an ITIN (individual taxpayer identification number) allows you to file federal taxes in the United States, it does not authorize you to work in the U.S. An ITIN number is available only to those who have to file taxes but are not eligible to apply for a Social Security number (SSN). Like the SSN, the ITIN is a nine-digit number, but unlike the SSN it must start with the number nine.

U.S. Work Authorization

According to the IRS, employers must verify an employee's SSN before offering them a job. An ITIN is not considered a substitute as it does not indicate that an individual can legally work in the U.S. If you have an ITIN but later receive U.S. work authorization, you must apply for an SSN. An ITIN is issued regardless of immigration status to resident and nonresident aliens who have reporting obligations under the Internal Revenue Code.

Purpose of the ITIN

An ITIN is available for those who have earned income in the U.S. or from U.S. sources but are resident or nonresident aliens and thus ineligible for an SSN. This identification number is also available to spouses and dependents of individuals with federal income tax reporting requirement. This provides that person the benefit of claiming a spouse or dependent on his or her tax return.

If you have a pending SSN application, do not also apply for an ITIN. The ITIN is used only if your SSN application is rejected.
