My son loves bugs and insects. Don't a lot of kids? He recently had the opportunity to play with a kit where he could actually dig some critters out of it! Sounds pretty awesome, doesn't it?
He used the Dr Cool Insect Excavation Kit.

This is everything that came inside of the kit. An adventure guide, activity booklet, hard beetle to dig through, brush, digging tool, and magnifying glass.
We put this on top of some paper towels, on a hard surface because we knew it was going to get a bit dusty and messy.
My son started digging through the hard green beetle but it is pretty tough to get through. We took turns digging a little bit at a time.
It may have been tough to get through, but that's part of the fun. I wouldn't want something he could dig through in 5 minutes and then be bored and done with it. This takes some time. You could do a little bit every day if you really wanted to...
We finally got through the beetle and discovered 3 really cool insects inside, each encased in their own flat glass dome.
The creatures inside were a scorpion, beetle and spider. My son's favorite was the scorpion. I thought they were all pretty cool though. They are rather small, compared to what I was expecting them to be, but still great. I like that they are secured in their own dome so that they will last for a long period of time.
The reason I was really looking forward to trying this kit was because my son is home schooled, and I'm always looking for new, hands-on activities that can actually teach him something. He also had a lot of fun using the activity booklet that came with and learning some facts about the bugs that he discovered. We had a lot of fun working together. I highly recommend, as long as your kids are old enough to use such things- could be a choking hazard if your child is too young. The key is to supervise and help them too, so they can have fun and learn with you.
I would love to try the other Dr Cool Kits in the future.
